Born in Amarillo, Texas, Karen spent her childhood
as an Air Force dependent, living in many states and
several countries. She graduated with highest honors
from University of Maryland, Baltimore County, in
1981, with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science.
After graduation, she became employed as a manufacturing
engineer for Westinghouse Electric, developing control
software for robotic assembly workstations. She followed
her assembly station from Columbia, Maryland, to College
Station, Texas, where it was used in a state-of-the-art
manufacturing facility producing printed circuit boards
for major defense contracts. While living in College
Station, she received her Master’s of Science
degree in Industrial Engineering from Texas A&M
University. Her areas of concentration were Operations
Research and Computer Simulations. She moved back
to Baltimore in 1988 and rejoined the engineering
group in Columbia. In 1994, she left Westinghouse
to become a Technical Specialist for USF&G Insurance
company in Mt. Washington, Maryland. During her ten
years employment at USF&G (which became St. Paul
Companies, which became St. Paul/Travelers), she was
promoted to Application Architect and was Frameworks
team lead for up to 80 software developers. In 2004,
Karen resigned her position to become an independent
consultant.
Karen’s other interests include tennis, making
gemstone jewelry, canine rescue and adoption, artisan
bread and pastry baking. She has won multiple awards
for her dessert baking.
