Karen
has been invited to speak at several international conferences. At
Smalltalk Solutions 2006 she presented a summary report describing
the process, drawbacks, improvements enjoyed by a conversion
of a major Smaltalk system to Java.
At the two ACM-sponsored events, Object Oriented Systems,
Programming Languages and Applications (OOPSLA), Karen
was invited to present Practitioner's Reports. The report
in 1997, "Foundation: A Model for Concurrent Project
Development," described the processes developed
at St. Paul (then USF&G) to enable 80 programmers
to work as independent teams culminating in a single
Smalltalk deliverable. The second paper, "SPCQuote:
From Smart Client to Distributed Processing," describes
the rearchitecture required to transform a rich-client
Smalltalk application into an n-tier server-based model
using Java Servlets running under Websphere, two Smalltalk
dialects, RMI, and XML as a means of data abstraction.
The final paper referenced herein was presented at IEEE's
Autofact Europe and describes an advanced control-based
robotic assembly station used to manufacture printed
circuit boards for large radar contracts. The software
described was patented by Westinghouse in 1989, with
Karen cited as the inventor.
